BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer has confirmed the automaker will build the long-rumored X4. Due in 2014, the new X4 is seen in Europe as a competitor to the 2013 Porsche Cajun and is being positioned by BMW as a companion to the X3 and a smaller sibling of the sporty X6.
European reports say the X4 is likely to be assembled at BMW's South Carolina plant. It will share powertrains with the X3, including a range of four- and six-cylinder gas and diesel engines.
In an interview with Germany's Auto Motor und Sport, Reithofer said, "Yes, we have positioned above the X3 a BMW X4." Reithofer said the new model would be roughly the same size as the X3. The magazine said the X4 will feature BMW's xDrive four-wheel drive, automatic start-stop, head-up display and voice control.
As shown in the artist's rendering, the X4 is expected to get the same "four-door coupe SUV" styling as the X6.
BMW also plans a full-blown X4 M performance edition, with twin-turbo straight-6 and seven-speed DCT from the company's M division.
